Jeremy Ferrell

Jeremy Ferrell is a renewable energy researcher and sustainability advocate with a background including a B.S. in Natural Resources from NC State, international experience in Latin America (Peace Corps and GTZ, Paraguay) and a Masters in Appropriate Technology from ASU. Jeremy has experience with renewable energy design and implementation, grant writing for renewable energy projects, workshop and course development, and international AT short courses in Nicaragua.

Current projects include researching biofuels feedstocks especially oilseed crops for Western NC and the development of a Modular Biodiesel Testing Facility at the Eco-Complex in Catawba County, NC. Jeremy teaches Biofuels Technology.

Dennis Scanlin


Dr. Scanlin is a Professor in the Technology Department at Appalachian State University and Coordinator of the Appropriate Technology Program. He was a co-founder of ASUs Sustainable Development Program, and has a long history of involvement with sustainable development and energy technology issues and activities. He has published numerous energy-related articles; developed and taught courses and workshops focusing on a wide variety of renewable energy and green building technologies; and has designed and constructed residential-scale hydro, wind, photovoltaic, and solar thermal systems. He currently directs several wind-related activities in the region, including an anemometer loan program in western North Carolina; a DOE-funded project to assess the feasibility of utility-scale, wind-produced electricity in North Carolina; and the Western North Carolina Small Wind Initiative. Scanlin is a member of North Carolinas Wind Working Group, and has helped to organize several wind-related workshops and conferences in the last year. He is also working with the TVA to identify and assess potential wind sites in the TVA region. Vita Spring 2006



Brent Summerville


Brent Summerville is a Renewable Energy Engineer with a BS in Mechanical Engineering from NC State University and a Masters in Appropriate Technology from Appalachian State. Brent has experience in renewable energy installations, developing and leading hands-on workshops, wind turbine testing, consultations and public presentations. He currently serves as the Project Manager of the Western North Carolina Renewable Energy Initiative.
